Originally conceptualized as a full-scale leisure resort in the mid 1970s, this pretty, secluded area on Lantau Island, near Hong Kong Disneyland, was transformed in the early 1980s into a private, self-contained residential development, known simply as “DB”. Spanning 6.5 square kilometers between Tai Pak Bay and Yi Pak Bay, it has developed into a low-density, child and pet friendly community that is predominantly favored by expats. Recreational facilities and nature trails abound, and a 24-hour ferry provides smooth sailing between DB and Central. Though private cars are not permitted, mini-buses operate within the enclave and larger buses run between DB and Tung Chung. DB’s well-designed infrastructure enables easy access to Central (by ferry, 25-30 mins), the airport (by bus, 30 mins) and Tung Chung (by bus, 25 mins) for onward access to the MTR. Housing: Developed in 14 phases, DB consists of a mix of low-rise blocks, high-rises and stand alone houses. Housing options range from spacious, semi-detached garden houses to high-rise apartments with panoramic sea views, with a large variation of property types & sizes catering to a wide range of demographics. Split-levels, duplexes, high ceilings, private gardens & terraces feature as added architectural elements. Some residents also choose to live on house boats berthed at The Marina. Schools: Discovery Bay International School (DBIS) and Discovery College provide both primary & secondary education. In response to demand, both schools have introduced Year 12 & Year 13 classes in recent years. Discovery College is run by the English Schools Foundation (ESF) and follows the International Baccalaureate Program. Aside from these options, many primary & secondary school children travel to schools on Hong Kong Island or nearby Tung Chung. Kindergartens include Discovery Bay International School Kindergarten, Discovery Mind Kindergarten, Discovery Montessori School and Sunshine House. Highlights: Community life centers around the DB Plaza which boasts a plethora of al fresco dining choices, shops, specialty stores & medical facilities. With an emphasis on relaxation, a range of facilities are provided to the public for outdoor leisure pursuits including an astro-turf football pitch, basketball court, bike path and various playgrounds. A 400m beach adds to the resort-like feel of the neighborhood and provides much enjoyment during HK’s summer months. Hiking trails lead up to Lantau’s peaks and a series of rock pool formations & streams. DB boasts 4 private clubs, namely the Golf Club, Marina Club, Club Siena and the Residents Club. These provide a multitude of facilities for their members to enjoy. A series of regular bus routes carry residents around DB. With private cars being banned, residents also get around by foot, bike and private golf cars (that are not inexpensive!). Ferries run to and from Central in 15-30 minute intervals during the day and 30-90 minute intervals at night. Bus routes are also conveniently connected to the MTR network, with access to both Sunny Bay and Tung Chung stations, as well as the Hong Kong International Airport.
