The area lying between Sheung Wan and Kennedy Town is often referred to as Western. With Sheung Wan just one stop away from Central on the MTR, Western is conveniently located for commuters. Characterised as a dense combination of residential and office buildings, the area has seen significant development in recent years with the growth of hip restaurants, galleries, and new residential and commercial towers. Housing: Homes in Kennedy Town and Sai Ying Pun offer properties similar to those in Central, but at a more reasonable price. Properties here range from modern large scale developments in high rise blocks to more traditional, colonial style buildings. While residents used to be predominantly local, there are an increasing number of expatriates choosing to locate here as a result of newly developed luxury homes along Kennedy Town’s waterfront. Schools: West Island School and Kennedy School, both members of the English Schools Foundation (ESF), are closest to Sai Ying Pun and Kennedy Town. The Woodland Pre-school has a number of branches in Central and surrounding areas, including Caine Road. Hong Kong University is located between Western district and Pokfulam. Highlights: With all kinds of shops lining the streets of Sheung Wan, Sai Ying Pun and Kennedy Town, and a range of public recreational facilities on offer, Western district is a self contained area well known for its convenience. The Western extension to the MTR Island Line was completed in 2014/2015. With stations at Sai Ying Pun, Hong Kong University and Kennedy Town, residents in these areas now benefit from the convenience provided by this mode of transport. The Western Market in Sheung Wan is very popular for its historical and architectural value. It is one of the oldest structures on Hong Kong Island, with a variety of shops and restaurants located inside.
