Shek O peninsula is a former fishing village on the southeastern side of Hong Kong Island. Its isolated location and beautiful scenery make it ideal for those who enjoy living in a quiet environment with maximum privacy. Shek O’s properties are all low-rise buildings, with a variety of townhouses and village houses that are occasionally available for rent. Shek O is served by buses only, and the nearest MTR station is in Shau Kei Wan, a 30-minute drive away.
Shek O is occupied by two main types of low-rise buildings: traditional village houses and colorful townhouse buildings with a more western architectural style. These properties are occasionally available for rent, and they combine nicely to create an interesting scenery that mixes the east with the west. Small, traditional village houses are located along the beach and within the village. Larger, more modern townhouses and detached houses are located on the headland. These properties tend to have large private outdoor areas.
Students residing in Shek O are eligible for school net number 16 in Hong Kong’s public school system. Shek O’s nearest international school is Hong Kong International School (HKIS) in Tai Tam, which follows the American curriculum. There are also some international pre-schools in Stanley, such as St. Peter’s Church Kindergarten (Stanley), MONTESSORI FOR CHILDREN (NURSERY), and St. Teresa’s Kindergarten, all of which are just a 20-minute drive away from Shek O.
As a neighborhood Shek O is famous for its slow, leisurely, and quiet atmosphere. Its neighboring Big Wave Bay, Shek O Beach, Shek O Country Park, and Cape D'Aguilar are also highly desirable attractions for tourists, enthusiasts of outdoor activities, and those looking to rent a house or apartment in the area. Shek O Beach and the local village are scattered with bars and restaurants, as well as public barbeque areas. Shek O market stalls sell some groceries, although residents usually shop at the larger supermarkets in Stanley and Tai Tam. The Dragon’s Back is a popular hiking trail, located behind Shek O. Just north of Shek O Beach is the Shek O Golf & Country Club. There are a total of 64 private residential properties within Shek O and areas such as Tai Long Wan Tsuen and Hok Tsui Tsuen.
